How To Cure Joint Pain Post Covid

Joint pain is one of the most common among people where age doesn’t matter sometimes, but what remains constant is that it reduces the quality of our lives.  However, post-COVID care is something that needs attention, even after a person has tested negative for the virus. After covid, most of the patients complain of joint pains after 3-4 weeks of recovery. These patients however test negative for chikungunya or dengue antibodies. Unlike chikungunya, where high-grade fever is another classical symptom along with joint pain, the post covid patients have only joint pain and no fever. The joint pain is due to an autoimmune attack on the joints. The pain is short-lived with no permanent damage to the joint.

Ayurveda advocates the administration of herbal decoctions, massage oils, kitchen remedies, and some herbs that help the liver to metabolize and eliminate the toxins.

  1. Using Ayurvedic oils to massage your joints can help relieve joint pain, inflammation, and stiffness. It is believed that regular Ayurvedic oil massages can help eliminate toxins and get rid of impurities in the body, it improves blood circulation and promotes the self-healing of cells, tissues, bones, muscles, and joints.

           Oils are basically formulations that are prepared from naturally sourced ingredients:

  • Mustard oil: Mustard oil is also rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid that may help decrease inflammation and relieve pain.
  • Tila Taila (Sesame oil):This helps to manage joint pain effectively
  • Nilgiri oil (Eucalyptus oil):It is antispasmodic and helps during muscle spasms and pain.
  • Almond oil: Heat a few tablespoons of almond oil and can directly massage into the affected area once it becomes warm.
  • Flaxseed oil: It is rich in a plant-based form of omega-3 fatty acids and might yield results for inflammation and joint pain.
  • The blend of organic oils such as jojoba oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil help ease any pain and stiffness in your body.
  • Eucalyptus oil (The aroma): It is said to have calmative effects on the brain, while the oil relieves you from the pain and swelling in the joints.
  1.        Some kitchen-Herbs which help in relieving joint pain are:
  • Turmeric: The golden spice possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties and the active compound curcumin functions as a counter antibiotic that relieves muscular pain and swelling.
  • Ajwain has anti-inflammatory effects. Adding just a spoon of ajwain in a tub of hot water and soaking your joints in the water for 5-10 minutes, will help ease swelling and pain.
  • Ginger helps reduce joint pain and swelling. You can drink ginger tea or apply the ginger paste to your joints.
  • Garlic: is known for its anti-inflammatory properties that prevent pain and inflammation in the joints affected by arthritis.
  • Peppermint: It has potent analgesics, anti-inflammatory and spasmodic properties of its leaves that alleviate pain and also soothe muscle spasms.
  • Clove: The essence of eugenol in clove works as a natural pain reliever and can soothe headaches, arthritis, and toothache.
  • Cinnamon: the spice has anti-inflammatory properties, which can ease swelling.
  1.       Few Ayurveda formulations that you can take and make a part of your lifestyle.
  • Chyawanprash –It can be taken to strengthen your immune system as well as the respiratory system. It’s advised to take 1tsf once a day with warm milk.
  • Triphala: It helps to regulate excess pitta in the body as well as eliminating toxins. Take 1 tsf with warm milk or water.
  • Giloy: Giloy has anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties that can help treat symptoms of joint pains. To treat joint pain consume giloy powder boiled in milk or boil 1-inch fresh twig in 1 glass of water and drink early morning.
  • Ashwagandha: As an analgesic, anti-inflammatory for joints and It also calms and strengthens the nervous system. Take 1 tsf with warm milk of water.
  • Shatavari helps to increase the strength of the musculoskeletal system. 1tsf granules with warm milk once a day.
  • Nirgundiis one of the most common herbs used to bring respite to joints.
  • Dashmulais are effective in inflammatory conditions in the body or Vata Rog.
  • Shallakikeeps joints intact and relieves them from any pain.

  • Taking adequate sleep and rest.
  • Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol.
  • Take regular medications as advised for COVID and also for managing comorbidities.
  • In case of persistent dry cough/sore throat, do saline gargles with 1 pinch of turmeric and take steam inhalation plain water or add few carom seeds in it.
  • Look for early warning signs like high-grade fever, breathlessness, Sp02 <95%, unexplained chest pain, new onset of confusion, focal weakness.

In conclusion, alternative healing methods have proved to provide long-term relief to the patient and boost immunity. Ayurvedic treatment can help heal the body’s organs and is free from any side effects.
